2016 Elections

On Wednesday, September 14th the membership of the Stonewall Democrats of Austin will meet in the Smith Auditorium at Congregation Beth Israel (3901 Shoal Creek Blvd) beginning at 6:30 pm to hear from candidates for City Council Districts 2, 4, 6, 7, and 10. In order to be eligible to be considered for the club endorsement candidates were required to respond to a questionnaire addressing a number of LGBT issues (candidate responses are below).

Endorsements will be made based on who the membership feel would best represent the interests of the LGBT community. In order to receive an endorsement a candidate needs to obtain at least 60% of the votes of those present and voting.

The following candidates will be considered for endorsement:

District 2: Wesley Faulkner, Delia Garza (I)
District 4: Greg Casar (I)
District 6: Jimmy Flannigan
District 7: Natalie Gauldin, Leslie Pool (I)
District 10: Alison Alter, Nicholas Virden, Robert Walker

We will also ask the members to vote on whether to consider endorsements in the ACC and AISD elections. If the membership supports this, the endorsement meeting will occur in October.

We encourage our members to be educated and informed voters in the Primary, General, and City Council Elections. To help with this Stonewall Austin has created a candidate questionnaire dealing with specific areas of interest to the LGBT community in Austin. We also conduct Candidate Endorsement Forums where our members can hear from the candidates seeking the Stonewall endorsement. We have created pages with candidate responses to the questionnaires as well as our endorsed candidates with links to their websites for additional information.

Do not forget the new Texas Voter ID laws are now in effect. Some voters may face extra scrutiny at their polling location. Make sure to bring one of the following forms of Identification with you to cast your vote:  TX Driver’s License, TX Personal ID Card, TX concealed handgun license, US military ID card, US citizenship with  your photo, US passport book or card, or Election ID Certificate (EIC) issued by DPS.

Your name on your ID must match your name on the voter ID list or be "substantially similar". If you are not permitted to vote or to report any issues at the polls, call the Travis County Democratic Party at 512-477-7500. For more information on Voter ID Basics click here.
